Tax Incentives Bring More Films to Northeast

Love That Dirty Water

There's something new afoot in Boston, and we're not just talking about the Celtics' winning ways. Thanks to some dramatic changes in the Massachusetts tax code for filmmakers, Boston is suddenly seeing an influx of Hollywood motion pictures being shot throughout the region.

Before the tax credit, only 5 major movies were shot in the Boston area over a 7 year period, including The Perfect Storm, Mystic River, and The Departed. Additionally, despite being set in Massachusetts, only a fraction of each production budget was actually spent here. Since the tax code revisions and incentives were passed in 2006, 10 major movies have come to Massachusetts over only the past 2 years, including 21, The Great Debaters, Bachelor Number 2, The Women, Pink Panther Deux, The Lonely Maiden, The Box, and Real Men Cry. The tax code now includes some of the following provisions:
  • 25% credit on all spending in state
  • No sales tax on production spending
  • No caps. No limits.
A complete summary of the incentives can be found here.

"The dramatic upsurge in production, sparked by tax incentives, would not have been possible without the efforts of many members of our community - channeled through the Massachusetts Production Coalition," remarked Joe Maiella, MPC President, "including the support of our coalition by Soundtrack and Finish as MPC corporate members."

As productions spend more time and money in Massachusetts, look for the Soundtrack Group to share its resources and knowledge. Soundtrack Boston and Finish can offer office space for rental, film transfer, dailies, ADR, talent payment services and much more.
Made in NY

The Knicks may still be the NBA's Junior Varsity team, but the New York City film and television world is entirely competitive. Certainly the 'Made In New York' tax credit incentives of 3 years ago helped greatly, and Soundtrack has been involved in the debate in Albany to create a special tax credit applicable to post-production specifically (more on that in a future issue).

Meanwhile, the number of shooting stages is growing and the volume of shooting activity is on the rise -- it's hard to travel around mid-town without running into the crews of Gossip Girl, Lipstick Jungle, Law and Order, or any one of about fifteen feature films that are always cycling through production -- the City of New York is as much a recognized 'character' as any A-list cast member. Further evidence of the city's activity: a new $30 million full-scale film lab coming to downtown, giving credence to the theory that NY production is on the upswing.

Now that Soundtrack F/T has 3 primary ADR stages and 2 secondary stages up and running, along with 3 dubbing stages, we're turning our attention toward affordable/convenient production and general post-production space, which seems to be the hot topic of the day. Soundtrack currently houses the post department for Nickelodeon's Naked Brother Band as well as several other TV and film production offices, and we're looking to expand on that service to fill the void. More on that topic as it progresses, but feel free to drop us a line if we can help with any 'space' issues.

Movie Night

movie posters

Each year Soundtrack has the privilege of working with some of the most talented directors, producers and actors in the film industry. This year was no exception, as we lent our talents to 7 Oscar-nominated pictures, including Eastern Promises, Juno, American Gangster, The Savages, Elizabeth : The Golden Age, In the Valley of Elah, and 3:10 to Yuma. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners. The list doesn't stop there. Get to your local theatre or video store to check out these Soundtrack-related flicks as well: Leatherheads, The Brave One, Reservation Road, Awake, Love in the Time of Cholera, Semi-Pro and In Bruges.

Let Them Have Blu-ray

At the Soundtrack Group, we've always prided ourselves on our ability to stay at the cutting edge of emerging technologies in an increasingly competitive market. Soundtrack Boston has once again set itself apart from the pack by offering the capabilities to author High-Definition Blu-ray disks with 5.1 capabilities right here in our studio for next day delivery. With Blu-ray players dropping in price, Blu-ray has become the heir-apparent to the standard DV media because of its storage capacity (up go 50gb on a dual layer) and it's support for high-quality, full High-Definition picture and sound. Now when you mix your HD picture with your 5.1 surround sound at Soundtrack Boston, we can send you a Blu-ray disc of your production the very next day that can be played on your home theater system. As Blu-ray authoring technology improves, we anticipate that the process of creating a Blu-ray disc will become faster - which will allow you to take a Blu-ray disc home with you at the end of your session.

Legends Night

Soundtrack was proud to be a part of the Ad Club's Legends Night. This year, Boston advertising legends Jack Conners (Hill Holiday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Inc.) Ed Eskandarian (Arnold) and Paul La Camera (The WBUR Group) were inducted into the New England Advertising Hall of Fame. Soundtrack's own Brian McKeever mixed the Legends Night video and COO Amy Blankenship attended along with Finish executive producer Andrea Papazoglou. Congratulations to Ad Club president Kathy Kiely and the entire Ad Club staff for a fantastic evening.

A Note from Rob
For over 30 years we've been steering The Soundtrack Group to a place where it has the size and capability to handle the largest national ad campaigns and mixing of A-list Hollywood features, yet small enough to know that you like your mocha lattes with just a dash of sugar. This newsletter is our way of keeping you in touch with the things that The Soundtrack Group is doing to use developing technology, a terrific staff and a little chutzpah to handle your projects.
