BOB CHEFALAS HAS HAD A SMASHING YEAR WORKING ON TOP NOTCH SHOWS!

   Photos courtesy of www.nbc.com

NBC will be premiering their new show Smash on Monday, February 6th at 10pm.  Created and Exec Produced by Theresa Rebeck (who currently has a play on Broadway), the show spotlights the process of mounting a musical, in this case about Marilyn Monroe.  With the amazing cast of Debra Messing, Will Chase, Angelica Houston, Megan Hilty and Katherine McPhee (yes from American Idol), we hope Smash is a hit!  We're proud to have this mixing with Bob Chefalas.  We are also very happy to have Sound Supervisor Mike Graham from Smart Post Sound in Burbank here with us working on this show.

In addition, USA will start airing new episodes of Royal Pains tonight, January 18th at 10pm.  We're very excited that they've also been picked up for a 4th season.  We really enjoy working with this show and crew led by Exec Producers Andrew Lenchewski and Michael Rauch and Producer Antonia Ellis.

BOYS & THEIR TOYS

Marc Graham (IT Manager), Rob Bessette (Colorist), Terry Lockhart (Senior Engineer), David Catt (Product Manager at Film Systems), and Tim Montgomery (VFX Artist).

It was a happy holiday for Finish Post when they teamed up with Black Magic Design to enhance the heart of their color correction suite with the addition of the DaVinci Resolve. Used on major motion pictures and broadcast commercials throughout the world, Resolve adds an extra tier of professionalism that is surpassed by none and matched by few. Real time grading, 2K/4K capability, node based image processing, 3D tracking, noise reduction, full stereoscopic 3D capabilities, and file input/output are just a handful of the upgrades that Resolve has to offer.

Our colorist, Rob Bessette, is now the proud father of two (a beautiful baby boy Camden (born beg. of Dec.) and his new Resolve). Rob is excited about the options that the Resolve will add to the color room, putting us on par with New York and Los Angeles.  Always on the forefront of color correction and post production advancements, Resolve is among the first to fully implement integration with both Avid and Final Cut Pro offline editing software, allowing for a much smoother work flow between the offline and online world. Timeline prep, conform, and rough composites can now be achieved solely in the color suite, saving you time and money. Rob can't wait to see you there!

AIRCRAFT INTRODUCES A NEW SALES REP

AirCraft is spreading it's wings all the way to California! David (aka "Leggo") Rojas, AirCraft's newest sales rep, began his journey with music at 15 making beats with his mom's "state of the art" component turntable/tape deck/radio set up. He's cut his teeth spinning for clubs, music industry events, corporate events and touring, as well as producing custom music for film/TV licensing, indie and major label artists, and national ad campaigns. Some clients include - Interscope Records, Dreamworks, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Def Jam, Scion, Red Bull, Reebok, K-Swiss, DGK, Mad Media Films, MTV, Showtime Networks, FX Networks and many others. We are happy to have him continuing to spread the good word in the City of Angels.

Tim Reppert has taken a larger roll as Managing Producer at AirCraft and has been busy creating customized music for Hill Holiday and Dunkin Donuts, as well as licensing music for McDonalds, Planet Fitness, Titleist, Tyson Foods, Toy State, Church's Chicken, Heluva Good, WGBH, and Jack Daniels. We are continuing to work with our international clients in Australia, Japan, Korea, Israel, The Netherlands, and Russia.

SIZE DOES MATTER

Often when starting on a new job the last thing on most producer's or art director's minds is what the final product will actually look like. They're concerned with who will be doing what, when  they'll be doing it, and for how much, along with a laundry list of other issues and questions that need to be addressed long before the project is into the post phase. No one expects the producer or the art director to have all the answers to all the spec questions we have, that's why you go to a post house, but by keeping a few key things in mind, you'll be able to save yourself a lot of time and money in the post-production process.

Remember Title Safe (and action safe)
This is an important one.  If your project is going to be watched anywhere besides the internet, then you need to pay attention to title and action safe.  Whether or not you fit into title and action safe will be the difference between a lot of overages and a late night call from Video Express telling you that your spot that needs to go out is wrong.  This is most important any time you are going to be down-converting to standard definition, because depending on the standard definition screen a small portion of your video will be cut off, this is why you need to stay inside action safe.  And this leads to the next point.

Know your Down-convert
More often than not, you will be finishing your spot in HD, but will also need an SD master for certain TV stations.  Often so much attention gets put on finishing the HD version in time, the SD gets forgotten.  But it's extremely important to know exactly how you want your HD spot to be down-converted to standard definition.  The three options are: anamorphic, letterbox, and center cut.  Center cut is very common, but also the most problematic.  It cuts off part of the left and right side of the 16x9 screen in order to fit the image into a 4x3 screen.  And if you haven't paid attention to title safe and action safe, then there is a possibility your copy, art cards, logo, etc may be cut out of the frame.

Where is your project going?
If your project is going to be a web video or used only for a power point presentation then a lot of the details such as frame size, frame rate, format, etc. are a little more flexible.  But if you are going to TV or something like a Jumbotron, then we need to know more of the details as early as possible.  If you know where your project is going to end up, then we are able to better help you figure out the more specific tech details.

Stereo or surround?
This is a fairly simple one, but can cost you unnecessary time and money.  Do you need to finish in surround?  If so, then your tape needs to be an HDCAM SR.  If not, you don't need to spend the extra money on an HDCAM SR tape and can instead just use an HDCAM tape.  This saves money and will cut down on the time it takes to make your deliverables and check everything for glitches.

Projects always change and there are always going to be last minute issues that have to get fixed late at night in the post process, but as long as you keep these four things in mind, you should be able to minimize the frantic late night emails about the issue with your project.

 A NOTE FROM ROB

For over 30 years we've been steering The Soundtrack Group to a place where it has the size and capability to handle the largest national ad campaigns and mixing of A-list Hollywood features, yet small enough to know that you like your mocha lattes with just a dash of sugar. This newsletter is our way of keeping you in touch with the things that The Soundtrack Group is doing to use developing technology, a terrific staff and a little chutzpah to handle your projects.
