New Hybrid Adds To
Feature Film Mixing

Editors can now sit behind the mix console and drive the board with the mixer!  Soundtrack has always embraced new technology.  We championed the first random access audio systems in the '80s as well as the first digital audio work stations (DAWs).  We also suffered through satellite audio transmission, along with you.  These days, we run Euphonix digital desks and Icon control surfaces, including Vcube picture capability, which allows high quality non-linear playback in our feature film and TV mixing rooms.

Today we proudly add the Euphonix EuCon Hybrid system to our list of new technology initiatives.  This system allows both  the mixers and audio editors working on DAWs to translate and control the DAWs directly onto the mix stage.

The Hybrid system bridges the gap between the 'classical' DSP-based console work surfaces (Console) and the DAWs that are hooked up to it (i.e. Protools).  This means that sound editors can sit at the console and contribute from the console's work surface, sliding faders and adding effects, just like the mixers do.  It also means that mixers can now control Protools directly from the console.  Mixers can now make changes/updates in the protools environment, having direct access to plugins, for example, and other such avenues.  This is truly a 'win win' with both mixer and editor now combining efforts in a transparent, technical fashion.

What does this all mean at the end of the day?  It means more people are contributing in a faster, more streamlined way.  It means the wall between how editors and mixers contribute is being lowered, and everyone can become more constructive, creative and collaborative.

This Hybrid system is already at work around the country.  Editors and mixers are already taking advantage of this new workflow method.

This flexible, best-of-both-worlds technology is only available on Euphonix digital desks, and in NYC, only available at Soundtrack F/T.  If you are interested in seeing this  progressive mixing workflow method at work, please contact  Chris Rich, Maegan Hayward or Steve Castellano to arrange a demo or session.

Coldplay (And Soundtrack)
Grabs Grammys!

Song Of The Year & Best Rock Album -- Mixed at Soundtrack!  Soundtrack is very proud to have mixed the landmark Coldplay record "Viva La Vida," which recently won three Grammy awards including "Record Of The Year," "Best Rock Album Of The Year," and "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group."  Coldplay was in fact, the most decorated act at the 2009 Grammys, winning  in three catagories and nominated for seven.

Soundtrack hosted Andy Wallace and the band for several months in late '07/early '08 as they locked out Studio G for both mixing and overdubs.  While it was an admittedly surreal experience to see Chris Martin in our common area working out piano arrangements and vocal parts, for the most part, the staff managed to contain themselves admirably.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Since then, Andy Wallace has been busy with a slew of other projects (potential 2010 Grammy candidates?) including Warner's Gallows,  Universal's Shiny Toy Guns, Hollywood's Plain White T's, and Polydor's Kaiser Chiefs, with Mark Ronson producing.

Congratulations to Andy and Coldplay on a job well done!

All About The Indies

After working with the Boston advertising community for many years, Finish has branched out in an effort to meet the growing needs of filmmakers in the area.  "Finish Indie" was born and has been busy with some great, feature length, independent films. TEN 9 EIGHT produced by Mary Mazzio of 50 Eggs, is a 90 minute documentary telling the inspirational stories of inner city teens competing in an entrepreneurial competition.  Rob Bessette transferred the dailies as well as scanned and prepped all the 16mm film.  Senior Colorist Bruce Bolden color corrected the film with Mary and DP Richard Klug.  The film used several different types of film & video formats.  Tim Montgomery pulled these together in the conform as well as the graphics, titles and visual effects.  50 Eggs is debuting the film this April in Finish's screening room.

Overgrown Productions out of New York is producing Mow Crew, a 95 minute comedic feature directed by Taylor Toole and filled with original music.  The film was shot on Martha's Vineyard last summer and explores the difficulties a young couple face as they try to escape the vineyard to pursue a recording deal in L.A.  Rob Bessette, Tim Montgomery & Bruce Bolden are joining forces again for the 16mm scanning, color correction and online.

When you work with "Finish Indie," you will be able to package the audio with Soundtrack Boston & NY.  For more information about "Finish Indie" please go to  www.finishedit.com/indie.

Killzone 2 Recently Released

Sony Computer Entertainment and Guerrilla Games recently released a new video game: "Killzone 2."  A review from IGN.com described the video game as
"..a bullet and adrenaline-fueled rampage against an implacable enemy and a fantastic shooter for the PS3.  Guerrilla has managed to make a technical masterpiece for the system that first-person shooters on the PS3 will be judged by from here on out."  Soundtrack's own Colin Weeks was lucky enough to work with Mario Lavin and Geert Donker from Guerrilla Games on some of the casting and voice over records for the game.
We loved working on this project, and it was a pleasure having Mario and Geert in New York.

 A Note from Rob

For over 30 years we've been steering The Soundtrack Group to a place where it has the size and capability to handle the largest national ad campaigns and mixing of A-list Hollywood features, yet small enough to know that you like your mocha lattes with just a dash of sugar. This newsletter is our way of keeping you in touch with the things that The Soundtrack Group is doing to use developing technology, a terrific staff and a little chutzpah to handle your projects.
